I have to be honest with you---I’m not the biggest cookie fan in the world and I’m pretty picky when it comes to them. A cookie has really got to be something special to spark my interest, to pass my test, to earn my trust.
In many ways, it’s just like dating! Or not, I don’t know...
They just never really enticed me the way cake or ice cream do. When I was a little girl, if given the choice between a cookie or some fruit, it’d for sure be the fruit!
Every time. Even now---the fruit.
Um, this is probably where many of you will probably click the ‘X’ up there to close down this tab, isn’t it? But you know, that’s too bad because I was just about to give you the low down on the best chocolate chip and walnut oatmeal cookie ...ever.
At least I think it is; and that’s definitely saying a lot because, well, I already told you, I’m picky with the cookie like that. So rest assured, this cookie will do right by you like a good guy cookie should.
Thanks for staying! And the prize is......
...COOKIES!
Listen my friends---I messed with this recipe until it was perfectly chocolatey, beautifully sweet with a touch of the salty (because yes, baked goods need salt too), and chewy the way it should be. It’s the most perfect chocolate chip and walnut oatmeal cookie.
It just is.
This is a one-bowl cookie recipe right here. It’s extremely quick and super easy to make. Can it get any better? Well yeah, like I said, they taste amazing!
So I prefer milk chocolate chips to dark chocolate chips when it comes to cookies and I feel like this kind of cookie really needs the milk chocolate chip. To me, it’s just a better match with the textures and flavors of this cookie.
But of course, if you prefer semi-sweet/dark chocolate chips, then by all means, you work that dark chocolate cookie thing. I’ll just hang out in my tiny corner over here, with my lovely little milk chocolate morsels, all happy and stuff.
Well last night, a bowl of gorgeously ripe and delicious grapes that I picked up from the farmer’s market sat before me on the counter as I baked these luscious cookies. And so, I had that lifelong decision to make again… the cookie or the grape?
Last night’s answer: I ate all the cookies---OK, only after eating all the grapes first. Well what else was I supposed to do while standing in the kitchen, waiting and staring at the cookies in the oven to finish baking?
Well, I really do hope you love this cookie as much as I do and please, do not forget--- look to the cookie!

Hi Becky! Oh yay! I'm so happy you tried the recipe out enjoyed the cookies! 😀 <3
Bituin Gallana says
Can I use rolled oats instead? I have some on-hand. 🙂
honestandtasty says
Hi Bituin! Well, I haven't tried it myself. You might be able to use rolled oats instead, but because of the low moisture content of the cookie dough recipe, you may find that the rolled oats are more dense than the quick cooking oats in the cookie. By the time the cookie bakes, the quick cooking oats are cooked, but the rolled oats may take a bit longer to fully cook through. The difference between them is just that quick cooking oats have been pressed so that they absorb water much faster, and therefore, cook faster! I wonder... maybe if you just barely pulse them in a food processor before adding them into the cookie dough mixture, the rolled oats might work pretty well. Best of luck to you!! 🙂

I ued rolled oats and they turned out fine. Doesn't really matter in my opinion which kind you use.
Thalia @ butter and brioche says

honestandtasty says
Thank you, Alaine! This is the perfect study snack, isn't it? You have the sugar for instant brain energy and then butter as well as oil from the walnuts for sustained brain food to help in the home stretch.

Sixia! This is such a delicious cookie! I'm sure you'll love it. The brown sugar is key! It makes it so chewy and tasty! Can't wait to hear how it turns out! Take a picture and show me 🙂

Sonia williams says
Best Cookies I have ever tasted . Baked them three days straight and still going strong as they do not last Long in my house.
PawelKr says
I used salted butter and light brown sugar as that was what I had on hand. I also added 1 tsp cinnamon. The cookies were great! My mother even reconsidered her position on this type of cookie, she usually doesn't care for them. The BIG bowl of the finished product was gone the next day, so I think the kids agreed. As a variation, I made bars with the same recipe, adding 2 medium, chopped granny smith apples and baking for about 30 minutes. Everone was similarly appreciative of these.
honestandtasty says
I LOVE that you used whatever you had on hand and used your own tastes to make what you liked. Those bars sound amazing! How ingenious! Thank you for coming back to comment after making all those delightful treats! I appreciate it 🙂
Sarah says
These are amazing!! Only had one cup of chocolate chips so I used a cup of white chocolate chips. May be the best cookie I've ever made! Thanks for the recipe!
honestandtasty says
Why thank you, Sarah! I'm so happy you liked them so much! You made my day 🙂

I own a baking shop in town and I tried these and it was a hit to the spot!!!!!!
honestandtasty says
That's awesome Rachel! Where's your shop? If it's close to me, I'd love to visit and try your goodies! So you tried these cookies at your shop?
Valerie says
These are delicious. I used half the butter, half the sugar and blended oats for oat flour instead of regular flour. They came out just like I like my oatmeal cookies, soft and chewy and not too sweet. Thanks Rachel!
honestandtasty says
Hi Valerie! So glad you enjoyed them so! 🙂 🙂
Jessika S. says
I just made these cookies a few days ago. I don't usually like cookies either but I love oatmeal cookies. I swapped the walnuts for cashews. They were soft, chewy, and that little bit of salt set it all off. They were absolutely delicious. My BF couldn't get enough.
Thanks for the recipe~!
honestandtasty says
Jessika, you're so very welcome! Thanks for making them!! And they sound AMAZING--cashews would be so good in these cookies! Brilliant and I love it. 🙂
Nora says
Hands down, best chocolate chip cookie recipe I've ever come across. Everyone I've shared the cookies with agrees. Thanks!

These are the first cookies that worked out for me. I tried a couple other recipes and they were too dry and crumbled but these were great. Definitely making them again.

I want to thank you for sharing your passion. I enjoy baking, it is one of many creative outlets. This recipe of yours is great, simple, to the point & wonderful to eat. All the best to you & yours.
honestandtasty says
Why thank you so much for your sweet comment! 🙂 🙂
Brandy Burton says
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I would just use only 1/2 cup brown sugar next time as cookies are more sweet than I'd prefer!
honestandtasty says
Hi Brandy! So happy you loved them! If they're a bit sweeter than you like, I'd recommend decreasing the white sugar instead of the brown sugar. The molasses in the brown sugar imparts a chewy cookie texture, but try whatever you want and let me know how it goes! 🙂 x

These do sounds so delicous. Will be giving these a go. Thanks for sharing.

Okay, this goes down in history as the best cookie I've ever made with the best shape, flavor and you don't feel so guilty eating it because it has so much fiber (from the oats). My new neighbors are gonna love me for these! Thank you for the recipe! You rock!!!
honestandtasty says
I love to hear that, Jessica! So happy you love them so! And you rock for trying them and them coming back to report on how you liked them! <3 xx
Diana says
This is the second year I've made these and it has been the biggest hit ever! However Kama I add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and I use mini chocolate chips does wonders.
Brandy says
Yes!! I was just thinking this! Thanks for your comment! I am going to add cinnamon and I love mini chocolate chips. Do you refrigerate the dough?
diana says
No, it is super thick! I also make mine pretty large, heaping tablespoon sized.
Bob says
Outstanding recipe. We halved the sugars. My wife has repeated "these are really good" three times now.
Brandy says
These look Ah-Maze-Ing!! I had a few questions!! I noticed that you didn't refrigerate the dough, do you think it would freeze or refrigerate well? Or would they not spread enough? Also, I am thinking of adding a bit of cinnamon because chocolate and cinnamon live happily ever after! <3
Thanks for the recipe! I am going to get to practicing for my upcoming cookie exchange!
Sally says
The best cookies!!!!! I’m not a cook but was invited to a cookie exchange. Picked this recipe. Proportions not the same as Toll House cookies so I was skeptical. I used less milk chocolate chips and less than half the white sugar. Then I refrigerated the dough for 2 hours. Best cookies I’ve ever had. Oh yeah, I used jumbo eggs. They are beautiful. THANK YOU....
honestandtasty says
Wonderful! I love to hear it! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!
Brianna says
These are really good and easy. I have my second batch in the oven now. I added some cinnamon but its delicious either way.
honestandtasty says
Thank you! So glad to hear it! And I love that you gave it your own touch!
Melanie Harris says
So stinking good! Oatmeal cookies are my favorite! And this recipe was so easy to make. I had everything on hand. I halved the record because I'm the only one who eats oatmeal cookies and I would be tempted to eat them all in a 24 hour period! These were great!
Denise says
I don't typically leave comments and I'm not a huge fan of cookies but I love these cookies! I was baking for a friend so I modified it to try and make it healthier. I used the 72 Cacao chips rather than milk chocolate chips and 1/2 cup coconut oil instead of a stick of butter. They were delicious and I'm not sure how many will be left for my friend!

I never leave comments on recipes but just came here to say.. GOOD LAWD!!!! Unlike you, I consider myself a cookie connoisseur and I just love (most) cookies so much. I stumbled upon this recipe here in 2022 in a quest to use up some walnuts and dark chocolate chunks I had laying around.. and oh my… THIS IS THE BEST COOKIE I HAVE EVER MADE OR EATEN. Hands down. This recipe is truly unbelievable and I’ve gotta say, thank you SO MUCH!! Only mods I made included using old fashioned oats instead of quick and dark chocolate chunks instead of milk. I reduced the sugar just a tad, and added 1/2 tsp of cinnamon. These were just out of this world and I can’t wait to surprise my husband with them when he gets back from his work trip. THANK YOU!!!!
Shay says
Oops meant to add I also browned the butter 🙂 really gives it a delicious nutty flavor. thanks again
Kat says
I'm a little late to the party, having just found this recipe a couple of months ago. However, my husband doesn't get tired of having these in his lunchbox, so I bake them every weekend. It's a heavy batter, but I found that I can use 2 C of oats instead of 3 and that makes it easier. I also customized it for half the choc chips since he only likes 1 or 2 chips in each cookie. If you like a dense, buttery and brown sugar flavor, this is the cookie you've been looking for.
