Let’s start with this-
What you won’t find here: Low-cal, low-carb, low-sodium (because me. need. salt.), low-this, fat-free-that recipes.
What you WILL find here: Wholesome, preservative-free, additive-free, well-balanced, nutritious, natural, make-your-taste-buds-smile, things-we-crave recipes and an honest, sometimes too-blunt-for-my-own-good voice.
So welcome to Honest & Tasty! My name is Bita and I’d love to share a bit of my backstory with you.
I’m California born and raised, the youngest in a super-duper Persian family. I mean, I didn’t know what meatloaf was until college. In fact, I still don’t quite understand meatloaf. Yet I knew to salt my tart fruits since I can remember (I know, but it’s all about balancing flavors) and rocked a unibrow and mustache until a couple years before I started college.
I just finished graduate school in Chicago, and received my PhD in pathology/immunology. I have always had a passion for science AND food, and honestly, the two of them, that’s a pretty decent pairing if you ask me.
I’m now back home in California with my husband Barry and our two birds, Hoofy & Pickle (AKA Hoofa/Hoof/Hoofananny & Pig/Pagh/Piglet).
The combination of being raised on exceptionally delicious and authentic Persian cuisine from my mother’s wonderfully-smelling kitchen and the mere fact that I have always been so magnetically drawn to beautiful flavors and honest, quality ingredients makes me so excited to share the food that I cook.
It is also really important to me to share with you my food philosophy: I cook and eat foods that are beneficial to my health, as I cook and eat foods that my body honestly craves. It’s simple but that’s many times the best way to go. Simple.
Studying science has actually pushed me further into the food realm. Here’s the thing— the more I learned about the science side of things, the more I realized how much the food aspect shouldn’t be neglected because it’s so incredibly important—without a doubt, no question about it.
So I try to find the best ingredients that are free of harmful, common additives so that I can make delicious and nutritious dishes. There are so many misconceptions surrounding food and health, about what’s good for you and what’s not, and in my honest opinion (I mean, that’s why I’m here, right?), a lot of the dogma out there is complete crap.
Hopefully I can shed some light on nutrition in addition to sharing my favorite recipes, but just as a general rule of thumb, if in doubt, look to our grandparents’ generation, or even their parents’ generation. Food was simpler, better quality, untampered, and fat and salt were not the enemies. Most importantly, we were all healthier. And frankly, not as hungry.
So this is my honest relationship with food.
Please come along with me and let’s cook, eat, and be happy! And healthy while we’re at it!
